ABOUT

Described as a ‘national treasure’, the NZTrio have recently appointed two very accomplished new players to complete their line-up, following an international search: violinist Amalia Hall and pianist Somi Kim. This is an exciting opportunity to hear this highly-valued ensemble re-emerge in a new incarnation.

The measure of quality of each of these outstanding musicians was the astonishing ensemble sound, as if the three players had been performing for many seasons together… And this programme gave opportunity for both ensemble playing and virtuosic skill aplenty.Radio 13, 2018

NZTrio are known for concerts that combine some of the most loved and celebrated works in the repertoire with lesser-known compositions. In their playing and commentary they bring to life thrilling and expansive connections between these familiar and newer pieces. This concert begins with the dark lyric beauty of Beethoven’s explosive C minor trio and finishes with Ravel’s piano trio, among the most treasured works written for this instrumentation. Between these masterworks are a new commission from NZ composer Salina Fisher, Greek-Canadian Kriztos Hatzis’ nostalgic, beautiful ‘Old Photographs’ and Sri Lankan-Canadian Dinuk Wijeratene’s sinuous, evocative ‘Love Triangle’.
