MATARIKI

Weaving Waiata

ABOUT

Kua haehae ngā hihi o Matariki
The rays of Matariki are spread

Gather up the whānau and join us on a mid-winter journey as we weave together strands of myth, music, song and storytelling into a magical, interactive theatre experience made for the entire family.

We invite you to a meeting place between Western classical music and traditional Māori music – a space to reflect on who we are and where we stand as New Zealanders in Aotearoa in 2020.

What songs do we carry with us? What tunes do we teach our children? What stories and histories do these songs tell?

In an exciting collaboration with the Hunter Collective, this work is the first chapter in a series of seven stories, taking place over the next seven years. Each year’s event will draw inspiration from one of the seven stars in the cluster – Matariki and her six daughters – to tell a new story.

The journey begins this July. Join us.
