ABOUT

Since 1965 we have witnessed thousands of young Kiwi secondary school students take to the stage from across the country as part of the annual NZCT Chamber Music Contest.

This is a significant part of our year as it unites students, parents, teachers, mentors and volunteers nationwide, in what has become the largest and longest running chamber music event of its kind.

The Contest acts as a springboard for our musicians of tomorrow. We see alumni appear as members of orchestras and chamber ensembles, here and overseas, and embark on successful solo careers. This is a prestigious national event which celebrates excellence.

The Contest is also about pursuing a discipline which has positive impacts on all facets of life for young New Zealanders.

Most of all, is it about building and bringing communities together in the joy of making music.

INFORMATION

UPDATE: 25 May 2020

Taking into account further information provided by the government on our alert levels, including confirmation of the date when NZ will be moving down to Alert Level 3 and guidelines for schools, we have had to adjust the Contest timeline in an effort to allow enough time for students to prepare and perform together.

CMNZ have decided to extend 2020 Contest entries until the end of term 2 as students slowly return to school at Alert Level 2. It is our belief that we can successfully deliver the Contest at Level 2, but it will operate differently to previous years.

If at any point from today we move back to Alert Levels 3 or 4 then the Contest, including coaching, will be cancelled.

What this means for you as a participant is:

  • entries, including for compositions, will remain open until Fri 3 July, the end of term two
  • Online coaching will take place between 8-19 June, registrations are now open
  • The entry fee shall be waived (anyone who has already entered will be reimbursed)
  • The district and regional rounds of the competition will not be live. Students will need to record a video of their group and include this with their application
  • During July school holidays our adjudicators will view these recordings and choose the regional finalists, whose videos will be shared online
  • Options for delivering the finals are being explored and will depend on where our alert level stands as at 3rd of July.

The new submission form and full rules for both the performance and composition are now available here on our website. You will need to submit your performance and spoken introduction video at the time of entry.

Thank you for your patience while we work through options on how to deliver the NZCT Chamber Music Contest to you in these unprecedented times. For now we need to stay in our bubble, practice our instruments, continue to learn, write music and work on projects that broaden our skills as musicians, so that when schools return we are ready to come together and perform.

ENTERING THE CHAMBER

Episode 1

COACHING

Applications close Friday 29 May

Chamber Music New Zealand is pleased to be able to offer virtual coaching sessions in early June to ensembles that are interested in entering the 2020 Chamber Music Contest. Working with some of New Zealand’s best musicians this programme aims to raise standards of performance in each region and give tools to each group to help them through their entry into the Contest that looks quite different this year. Most significantly, we aim to give groups of students access to teaching of the highest quality that brings them closer to reaching their potential.

We will try and give coaching to as many groups as possible. If you do miss out, please ensure you follow the Contest facebook page as we will also be releasing more advice from our coaches on there.
